Some History about the Area

Largely rebuilt in the art deco style after the 1931 earthquake, Napier’s CBD is centred on three streets: Tennyson, Emerson and Dickens. Houses cover the hill behind (formerly Scinde Island) with Ahuriri and the busy port beyond.

William and Elizabeth Colenso’s fragile home was at Waitangi, near Clive, south of Napier. The first sheep arrived in the Bay in 1849, driven up the East Coast from Wellington. The first winery in New Zealand, Mission Estate, was established here in 1851. More than 70 other wineries now share the region – and there is fine local food to match.

From Marine Parade you’ll see the glorious sweep of cliffs that leads to Cape Kidnappers, with its large gannet colony. A fine view of the area is to be had from Otatara Pa site, (16 minutes drive down Kennedy Road and Gloucester Street). A drive to the higher vantage point of Te Mata Peak, near Havelock North, takes half an hour.
