Joe Bessler, Professor of Theology
From July 31st until August 5th Joe Bessler, Professor of Theology at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Oklahoma, will be in Auckland to lead a week of theological inspiration and challenge, connecting the insights of scholars with the lives of contemporary people of faith.
Joe is the author of a number of books. He has worked closely with the Westar Institute, both in the latter years of the Jesus Seminar and in the beginnings of the God Seminar. Joe specializes in the discipline of Constructive Theology and teaches courses on the interaction of religion and culture, including: Religion and Politics, Theological Themes in the Contemporary Novel, and Theological Autobiography.
Tuesday July 31st, 7.30 p.m. at St Luke’s, 130 Remuera Road, Remuera, Joe will speak on “A scandalous Jesus: How 3 historic quests changed theology for the better.”
Thursday August 2nd, 7.30 p.m. at St Luke’s, 130 Remuera Road, Remuera, Joe will speak on “A scandalous Jesus: Six Models of Faith emerging from the Jesus Seminar”.
Friday August 3rd, 7.00 p.m. drinks and nibbles, 7.30 p.m. lecture at St David’s Khyber Pass. Joe will deliver the annual Ferguson Lecture on the subject: “The Virtues of a Questionable Faith”.
Saturday August 4th, 10 a.m. there will be a 2 hour seminar at St Luke’s discussing how the study of the historical Jesus helps us re-imagine lives of faith, lives of prayer and practice. The morning will conclude with a BBQ lunch. [St Luke’s will provide meat and rolls, and attendees are invited to bring a salad to share].
Sunday August 5th, 9.30 a.m. St David’s Khyber Pass. As part of the worship service Joe will preach on “Seeking the Body of God.”
Cost: The Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday’s sessions are $10 each or $25 for all three. The Ferguson Lecture is entry by donation.
